Design and engineer secure habitats for gentle herbivores, embark on daring expeditions to track down elusive species, and uncover the secrets of powerful predator dinosaurs. Two-week intensive program focusing on Extended Reality (XR) development. Students learn creative expression, XR process & prototyping, AR development, and portfolio development. Participants will create a basic working prototype of an augmented reality experience using contemporary development platforms like Aero or SparkAR. Program includes orientation on July 17 at 4pm EST via Zoom. Prerequisites: Algebra 2 or comparable logic class. Open to ages 15+ (grades 9-12). Week-long summer day camp for rising 1st-2nd graders (July 20-24, 2026). Campers explore STEM and engineering concepts in small groups and apply them to hands-on engineering design challenges. Bring ideas to life with the latest graphic design and illustration technology. Students learn about logos, t-shirt graphics, phone apps, concert posters, game characters, and team mascots. Journey through the design process from sketching to software, printing to promotion. Camp runs 9:00am - 3:00pm daily. For ages 13-18. NOTE: Listed as FULL.

Week-long leadership and design experience for Forsyth County high school students (July 20–24, 2026) that introduces students to design thinking, community-centered problem solving, and real-world project work. Students work collaboratively, engage with community needs, and build skills in observation, idea generation, prototyping, communication, and presentation. Sponsored by Community Design Studio.

This two-week course involves construction of an 11-foot Monhegan Island Skiff, a traditional wooden boat. Students will learn time-honored methods of craftsmanship and design, use hand tools like chisels and planes, develop joinery skills, and apply traditional building techniques. The course includes rowing, sculling, line handling, knots, and excursions exploring Maine's maritime heritage. The program includes a $40,000 scholarship for students who later matriculate at COA.

Design the ultimate candy delivery system. Use carpentry skills like sawing, drilling, and hammering to build a game that dispenses treats. Ages 9-12.

Week 6 - 7/27 - 7/31 (9 AM - 3:30 PM) for Ages 12 - 16

Woodland Tinkering is all about design & collaboration in the wild. Children will work together to build their own play experiences using unique combinations of materials and the environment as their inspiration. This is a drop off program that meets July 27th to July 31st, 2026. Children ages 8-12 will have opportunities to problem solve, make new friends and deep dive into imaginative play. The class is 100% outside, runs Monday-Friday from 9:00am to 2:00pm. Children should bring a hearty snack, lunch and refillable water bottle. Physical and vaccination records required before May 10th. Cancellation policy: 15% fee if cancelled 4+ weeks prior, no refunds for illness/weather.

One-week program for rising freshman and sophomores in high school that allows students to explore an interdisciplinary program. This experience exposes early high school students to different career and major pathways. Runs August 3-7, 2026.
