Nuclear Science Week (NSW) 2026 is an international, week-long celebration running October 19-23, 2026, with Wilmington, NC selected as the national host city. The Wilmington Area Local Section of the American Nuclear Society (ANS) is organizing the event, with strong industry partnerships including Duke Energy and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy. Each day of NSW focuses on a different aspect of nuclear technologies—ranging from energy and medicine to innovation, careers, and environmental stewardship. Planned activities include hands-on student experiences, facility tours, and community events. Local events also take place nationwide during the same week. Wilmington previously hosted NSW in 2016. The National Museum of Nuclear Science & History is located at 601 Eubank SE, Albuquerque, NM 87123.

The Bloomington Pumpkin Launch is an annual fall event where teams build mechanical pumpkin-launching devices and compete in accuracy and distance contests. Spectators can watch pumpkins soar, including drops from a bucket truck. The event features live music, autumn-themed activities for kids, and food vendors. Launcher divisions include Youth Human Powered (elementary/middle school), Student Human Powered (high school/college), and Adult Human Powered. Size classes: Large (5+ lbs), Small (2-4 lbs), and Mini (<2 lbs, all components fit in a single vehicle). Cannons and chemically powered launchers are NOT permitted — mechanical only. No fuel, compressed air, electricity, explosives, or other chemical/fluid components allowed (exception: small powered winch to cock throwing arm). A safety strap is required on the throwing arm after cocking. Catapult-style devices must launch overhand, not sidearm. Each team competes in four rounds each for accuracy and distance, and must bring a minimum of eight pumpkins weighing 5–8 lbs. Launcher team registration deadline is October 16, 2026. No fee to register a launcher.

The Yinghsia Shih Li Memorial Scholarship honors Yinghsia Shih Li, who overcame humble beginnings in China and WWII to earn her undergraduate physics degree in Taiwan and Master's in Physics in the United States. This scholarship supports young female students with Yinghsia's determined nature and passion for STEM. Open to female high school seniors graduating from San Luis Obispo County, California with minimum 3.0 GPA pursuing STEM degrees (agricultural science, biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, or physics). Two applicants will be selected to earn $10,000 each per year. The scholarship is renewable.

AVS Science Educators' Workshop on November 9-10, 2026, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. A two-day in-service workshop on low-pressure experiments and modeling for high school science teachers from the United States and Canada, held since 1990. The workshop has five elements: (1) lectures on underlying science and mathematical calculations, (2) hands-on experiments and model development under instructor guidance, (3) onsite visit to a major industrial or research laboratory, (4) overview of science and technologies using vacuum technology, and (5) lessons on vacuum pump operation and maintenance. Approved for CEUs and aligned with national science and mathematics standards. Participating teachers receive a Certificate of Completion, 1.5 CEUs from the University of Dayton, and a vacuum system for their school (school must sign a liability release). Application deadline: September 18, 2026.

STEM Day at SeaWorld San Diego is designed for students in grades 1–12. Activities include: 'How Fast Can You Go?' (science of movement in water and marine animal locomotion), 'A Tail of Force' (physics of motion, force, and resistance with hands-on experiments), and 'What Big Teeth You Have!' (measuring and comparing shark teeth using mathematical formulas to estimate shark size). Stations are located at Wild Arctic Plaza and the Shark Encounter Pathway. Spring 2027 Aerospace & Rocketry afterschool program for K-8 students in Minneapolis Public Schools. Students train like astronauts, rocket scientists, flight engineers, and drone pilots. Activities include designing and flying hot air balloons, gliders, pressurized water rockets, and solid-fuel rockets. Students collect launch data and tweak prototypes for maximum altitude, applying the physics of flight and Newton's laws. Older students engage in higher-level aerospace engineering: designing precision model planes, navigating multi-rotor drones, and launching solid-fuel rockets; analyzing pitch, roll, yaw, and thrust-to-weight ratios; tracking peak altitudes with altimeters and deploying recovery systems.
