Veterinary Technology Summer Pre-College Program

Two-week intensive program for rising junior and senior high school students exploring veterinary technology careers. Week 1 covers introduction to veterinary technician roles, medical terminology, animal anatomy/physiology, animal behavior, breeds, shelter operations, livestock handling, and community clinic participation. Week 2 includes companion animal diseases, microscopy, diagnostic imaging, anesthesia monitoring, parasitology, first aid, hospital tours, and continued livestock work. Daily schedule 9am-4pm Monday-Friday. Includes field trips to UMass Hadley Farm, veterinary referral hospital, and animal shelter. Both commuter and residential options available.

2026 Swain County Agricultural Fair

A County Fair-style festival featuring judging of vegetables, eggs, and flowers; agricultural demonstrations; craft vendors; food vendors; live music; livestock shows; youth activities; and competitions including Battle of the Bands. The fair runs Friday 3:00 PM - 9:00 PM with livestock shows, food trucks, craft vendors and Battle of the Bands, and Saturday 11:00 AM - 6:00 PM with music headliner and all fair activities. Bart Nelson Memorial Sheep Scholarship

The Bart Nelson Memorial Sheep Scholarship provides financial assistance to high school seniors from Iowa, who have been involved in sheep projects or activities. Students planning to attend a community college, college, or university in Iowa are encouraged to apply.
