Since 1941, the WV State Conservation Camp has welcomed youth from all over the state. The goal is to acquaint West Virginia youth with the social and economic values of natural resources and environment, create a desire to save and defend these resources, and develop future conservation leaders. Classes include Fish Management, Forest Protection, Conservation Law Enforcement, Nature Awareness, Watershed Management, Wildlife Management, Soil Conservation, Forest Management, Youth Conservation, Parks and Recreation, Forest Products, and Water Quality Conservation. Additional activities include Trap Shooting, Archery, Small Boat Safety/Handling, Rappelling, Ax Throwing, Stream Quality Improvement, .22 Caliber Rifle Marksmanship, Outdoor Cooking, Fishing Skills, Non-game Wildlife, and traditional camp activities. Alpha I is a statewide week-long summer camp open to West Virginia youth ages 12-21. Campers participate in week-long workshops, build teamwork and leadership skills within small age-specific peer groups, engage with guest speakers during hands-on assemblies, and develop new skills while learning lifelong habits for a healthier life.
