FREE Bokashi Composting Workshop-Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium

Bokashi is a simple fermentation style of composting that relies on anaerobic or effective micro organisms (EM)-Think Probiotics! This style of composting pickles your food scraps, is great for small spaces, and allows you to compost prepared foods, scraps, meat, small bones, and dairy in only 5-8 weeks! Attendees received a FREE bokashi system complete with 2, repurposed 5-gal buckets with air-tight lids and 2 lbs of upcycled bokashi bran from Garden of Oz (limited to one system per household WHILE SUPPLIES LAST!). Pittsburgh Zoo and Aquarium admission is included with event registration! Park in the main Zoo parking lot and proceed to the Education Complex. Financial support provided by the Department of Environmental Protection's Environmental Education Grants Program.

Sustainable Food and the Ocean

6-day overnight camp for students in grades 10-12 exploring the deep connections between food, health, and the environment. Activities include hands-on experience in a state-of-the-art food science lab studying fermented foods, microbiome health, chemistry of pickles and jams, and preparing protein-rich meat substitutes. Includes campus garden exploration, plant walks along the shore, boat tours of local oyster farms, visits to regenerative farms, and snacks prepared by RWU's nationally recognized chefs.
