April 6 Discovery Day at Whispering Pines

Our Discovery Days offer kids a chance to enjoy the outdoor fun and adventure of Schoolhouse of Wonder when they have a free day from school routines. Each camp day will be different, but each one will involve games and exploration. Join us for deep woods and meadow games, fort building, whittling, stories and songs around the campfire and an opportunity to build your earth skills and knowledge of the natural world. Activities will vary seasonally. We try to spend as much time outdoors as possible, even on chilly days! Please send your camper dressed for the weather.

Flippers, Phenomena, and a Fully Released Curriculum: Making a Splash in Elementary Science

Set sail on a journey through the newly released full elementary OpenSciEd curriculum--where manatees glide, dolphins echolocate, and young learners tackle real-world phenomena with brilliance and curiosity. In this session, we'll dive into an instructional approach that supports all students in making sense of complex science ideas through coherent, phenomenon-driven storylines. Participants will experience a taste of a third-grade unit to figure out why living things live where they do --connecting you to the why and the how of 3-dimensional science teaching. Along the way, we'll explore key features of the curriculum through classroom video and surface how classroom agreements can foster inclusive and collaborative environments. We'll also unpack how purposeful classroom discussion helps students make sense of science, not just memorize it. Come ready to explore, reflect, and imagine what's possible when high-quality materials meet the brilliance of elementary learners. Limited space available.

Activities may include creating safe personal care products, cleaning polluted water, designing stretchy materials, or exploring medicine production through age-appropriate chemistry concepts. Daily schedule: 9:00 am - 4:00 pm, June 22-26, 2026.
