We will get a chance to practice different ways of starting fire, and learn about its many uses for basic survival like cooking food and making tools. Let's circle around and celebrate its warmth while we tell stories and riddles. We will also play our classic Schoolhouse games and enjoy the creek if the weather allows. Join us this week to see if we can harness the heat to our advantage! In addition to the theme-related activities listed above, every week of camp may include some classic Schoolhouse activities such as: morning and closing circle, water time, deep woods and field games, whittling, storytelling, and of course, looking for any critters we can find! From the iconic debris hut to advanced tarp configurations, we will cover the construction of shelters that block wind, shed water, and trap body heat. Whether you are a hiker, a back-country enthusiast, or someone who wants to be prepared for the unexpected, this seminar will give you the confidence to build a 'home' wherever you stand. Participants will be taken to our wooded trails, where they will be shown how to forage for the right shelter materials. Target audience: Adults and teens ages 10+. Overnight science camp in the high desert at John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. Activities include documentary filming, desert survival skills, rafting, and backpacking. Drop off at OMSI SE Water Ave Museum at 7am Monday, pick up at 5pm Friday. Registration opens February 10th at 10am.

Age: Boys entering 6th - 9th grade. Overnight camp from July 24-25. All-boys, overnight camp focused on survival skills in the wild! Offers boys hands-on activities, team-building, career exploration, and a chance to meet local natural resources professionals. For ages 11-14. This camp fulfills the requirement of the North Dakota Hunter Education Certification. All campers will participate in classroom-style sessions and live fire sessions in shotgun, muzzle loader and archery. There is required work to complete before camp begins. The required hours of Hunter Education instruction are a minimum of 14 hours. Participants will learn basic survival and first aid skills, basic trapping skills, and tree stand safety. Camp runs August 2-6, 2026, beginning with check-in at 4 p.m. Central time and ending at 11 a.m. Central time. 4-H membership is NOT required for participation. Registration opens March 1, 2026.
